Reporter Tim Barber left WFTV-Channel 9 after five years to go to WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C. He works on nights Monday through Friday as a general assignment reporter.”I kind of grew up on Channel 9,” Barber, 28, said Friday. He started at Orlando’s ABC affiliate just months out of college when then-news director Bob Jordan hired him.
“In the WFTV newsroom, you either sink or swim,” Barber said. “I was thrown into the deep end and forced to swim. Luckily, Matt Parcell was the one who took me under his arm and was instrumental in my career.” Parcell, who was managing editor when Barber started, is now WFTV’s news director. Barber said he owed the last five years to Jordan, Parcell and several other mentors at the station.
“I’m supposed to say how disappointed I am to be losing Tim, but I really am happy to see him get a chance to show Washington, D.C., what he can do,” Parcell said. “Tim showed up from a small Texas market and had to figure out how to report at the level we require. He did it, and he did it very well. We’re glad he was on our team.”Barber’s left the station at the same time as anchor Bob Opshal’s.
One story that stood out for Barber was using autopsy reports to demonstrate the severity of Central Florida’s heroin problem. His other reporting ranged from explaining expansions at Walt Disney World to exposing fraud at assisted living facilities.
Barber grew up in Grand Rapids, he first started telling stories at Elon University’s student-run news program Phoenix14News. In the summer of 2008, he took off for New York City to intern at The Early Show. The following summer he returned to CBS to intern for the senior producer of 60 Minutes where he helped produce the Michael Vick story.
Two weeks after graduating college I was on the air in Lubbock, Texas at the local ABC affiliate, KAMC 28 News. The town was small but the stories were big. In his one year in Texas, he covered a flood, wildfires, a plane crash, the search for missing 13-year old Hailey Dunn, an oil spill in the Brazos River and the arrest of Lubbock terror suspect Khalid Aldawsari.
he was also the only local reporter to interview former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales after his grand jury charges were dropped. Barber said he would miss the people of Orlando the most. “I met a lot of great friends, friends I’ll fly back to see,” he said.
