Terrace Martin Biography
Terrence Martin born Terrace Jamahl Martin is an American musician, instrumentalist, composer, rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer and actor hailing from Los Angeles, California. Over the years, he has been involved in the production of records for several prolific artists in the music industry such as Stevie Wonder, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, The Game, Busta Rhymes, YG, Charlie Wilson, Raphael Saadiq amongst other artists. In regards to composition and instrumentalism, his style of work spans from from funk, jazz to classical, soul and hip hop. Terrence recently released his sixth studio album titled Velvet Portraits on his newly formed label, Sounds of Crenshaw Records, through Ropeadope Records which saw his album being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album in that year.

Terrace Martin Young
The producer began playing the piano while young at age six. When he was 13,he had already started producing his first tracks on his Casio CZ101 Keyboard and an E-mu SP-1200. While at Locke High School, he became first chair of the All-State Jazz Band, studing under the prolific Reggie Andrews. As a young man, he was skilled at playing horns and his musical prowess astonished talk show host Jay Leno, who presented him with a scholarship and later purchased his first professional horn. Upon completion of his high school studies,Terrace enrolled for classes at CalArts later quiting school to focus on music. He began touring with P.Diddy and the gospel choir God’s Property.
Terrace Martin & Snoop Dogg
The producer catapulted his name to fame upon his collaboration with Rapper Snoop Dogg when he produced a Power 106 radio drop with the rapper. Terrence scored a minor hit with Snoop’s rap group 213 on their hit song “Joystick” which cemented his bond with snoop making him one of Snoop Dogg’s sought after producers.
In 2007, he signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records.

Terrace Martin & Devi Dev
The producer teamed up with radio personality Devi Dev and went on to release the EP titled ‘Here, My Dear ‘ On September 28, 2010. The EP featured Wiz Khalifa and rapper Overdoz on the first song titled “Roll Up Another One”. Additionally, The EP features guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Charlie Wilson, Kurupt, Kendrick Lamar, U-n-i, James Fauntleroy II and pianist Kenneth Croutch. ‘Here, My Dear’ is inspired by Marvin Gaye’s 1978 album of the same name.
The Sex EP
On December 21, 2010, Terrace Martin and Devi Dev collaborated once more, launching their online music series #DeviTerraceTuesday.
On February 22, 2011 they released their second project together, The SEX EP.
Terrace Martin 3CHordFold
In 2013, Martin released 3ChordFold, a fusion studio album project. 3ChordFold was followed up with 3ChordFold: Remixed in December 2013, and 3ChordFold: Pulse in Spring 2014, which featured many live performances with guest appearances from Robert Glasper and Thundercat, among others.
Terrace Martin & Kendrick Lamar| To Pimp A Butterfly
In 2015, Terrence was heavily involved in the development of Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed album, To Pimp a Butterfly, which was nominated for a Grammy on the same year.
Terrace Martin Velvet Portraits
Terrace premiered his long-awaited, sixth studio album titled Velvet Portraits On April 1, 2016, on his Sound of Crenshaw label through Ropeadope Records. Velvet Portraits features guest appearances from his To Pimp A Butterfly cohorts namely Kamasi Washington, Lalah Hathaway, Robert Glasper and multi instrumentalist Thundercat featuring his father Curly Martin on drums and legendary soul group, The Emotions. The album was recorded in Los Angeles and Omaha, Nebraska.
Velvet Portraits was nominated in the “Best R&B Album” category of the 59th Grammy Awards.
Terrace Martin Influences
Terrace has been on record saying that: “I started producing hip-hop tracks because it was the music of my time, but I never lost my love for jazz.” He cited some of his influences to be jazzists and composers Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Jackie McLean, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Stitt, Grover Washington, Jr., Rapper Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, Battlecat, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and 1580 K-Day.
