Sackur is a British journalist currently working as a regular presenter for the HARDtalk, a current affairs interview program on BBC World and News 24.
Prior to this, he was BBC’s Europe correspondent prior to which he was the BBC’s Washington correspondent. His career with BBC started in 1986 as a trainee.
The year 1990 saw him being appointed as the BBC’s foreign affairs correspondent. In addition, he was part of the BBC team of correspondents that covered the Gulf War and spent eight weeks with the British army when the conflict began.
He was a witness to the last days of communism while working as a journalist for BBC Radio, reporting on the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and Germany’s reunification.
Stephen joined the BBC’s Middle East team in Cairo in 1992 and relocated to Jerusalem in 1995. He covered the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority under Yasser Arafat during this time.
Stephen spent two weeks in South Lebanon with Hezbollah guerrillas while working on a documentary about Islamic fanaticism.
Stephen served as the BBC’s Washington reporter from 1997 to 2002. He covered the scandal of former US President Bill Clinton and his ensuing impeachment trial, the US presidential elections of 2000, and interviewed US President George W Bush during this time.’
Stephen returned to Iraq shortly after Saddam Hussein’s fall in 2003 and took the first broadcast photographs of Iraq’s mass graves, which included the deaths of thousands of Saddam’s government victims.
Stephen is a proud graduate of Cambridge University and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
