Ron Magers Career And Education
Magers grew up in Cordova, Alaska and Ellensburg, Washington, born in San Bernardino, California. When he started hosting radio shows as a part-time job, Magers gained early broadcasting experience as a high school student in Toppenish, Washington. In 1965, when he joined KEZI-TV in Eugene, Oregon as a reporter and news contributor, he began his professional television career. He made and anchored the 11 p.m. later. KGW-TV newscast in Portland, Ore. (1967-68). From 1968-74, Magers worked at KPIX-TV in San Francisco, Calif. as a reporter and anchor. He also hosted the nationally syndicated program “Magers Electric Impressions” in 1971 for a Group W 30 minute weekly.

Magers co-anchored the 5, 6, and 10 p.m. between 1981 and 1997. WMAQ-TV newscast. In early May 1997, when they left Channel 5, Magers and then co-anchor Carol Marin made national headlines. The decision to leave was in protest against Jerry Springer’s hiring of the station as a commentator at 10:00 p.m. Bulletins of news. WMAQ management permitted the early release of both anchors from their contracts. Both thought Springer’s addition would have given an unnecessary tabloid feeling to the broadcast. Before he left his position as contributor, Springer made only two comments.
