Santelli began his career as a commodity trader and order filler with Drexel Burnham Lambert, when he the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade in 1979. He then rose the ranks to become the Vice President of Interest Rate Futures and Options.

In 1999, he got a full-time job at CNBC and has been working for the channel ever since. He regularly contributes to CNBC’s business show “Squawk on the Street” (M-F, 9AM-11AM ET). He provides live reports on the markets from his experience as a trader and financial executive.

He has previously worked for an institutional trading and hedge fund account for futures-related products as its vice president. On February 19, 2009, he made a statement that is credited for being a catalyst for the early formation of the Tea Party movement. This is a fiscally conservative political movement in the Republican Party. It calls for lowering of taxes and cuts in government spending to reduce the American national debt and federal budget deficit.
