Rafael Romo is the Senior Latin American Affairs Editor of CNN Worldwide. He is based outside Atlanta and reports to Parisa Khosravi, Senior Vice President of international newsgathering for CNN Worldwide. Romo is incharged of tracking the top stories across Latin America for the global audiences of CNN across its multiple platforms.

Romo, a native of Mexico, is an Emmy-award winning, bilingual journalist with 20 years of experience as an anchor, correspondent, manager of news coverage and journalism professor. He came from Chicago to CNN , where he worked for CBS as general assignment reporter and as correspondent and anchor for Univision. He is fluent speaker and writer of Spanish and English and has reported in both languages throughout his career.

Rafael, since joining CNN in 2009 he has covered various significant events such as the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake. He also travelled to Jamaica after a manhunt for the alleged leader of a drug gang to cover the violent riots , to Peru to cover the arrest of Joran var der Sloot and to Brazil for coverage around the World Cup and of massive floods that left thousands of people homeless.

Romo conducted a special investigation about the human trafficking of young girls from Mexico to the United States for the purpose of sexual exploitation, as part of Freedom Project, a CNN initiative focusing on ending modern-day slavery.

He has had a chance to interview leaders such as Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Vicente Fox and has covered natural disasters such as Hurricane Mitch in Central America. He also witnessed the last two visits of Pope John Paul II to Mexico and reported from within the community of San Salvador Atenco in the middle of an angry, machete-wielding mob fighting a government’s decision to build an airport.

During the 2008 presidential elections, he held the post of Executive Producer at Univision Radio . He also worked for the news magazine Aqui y Ahora as international correspondent where he reported on Mexico’s 2009 flu pandemic.

He was recently inducted to the Alumni Hall of Fame at the Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. His career in Journalism began in 1990 when he worked as a reporter for KPHX Radio 1480 AM in Phoenix, Arizona. He has a bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting from Arizona State University.
