James is an American journalist currently working as a host for Gardening by the Yard Show on HGTV.

Paul claims that there was a time when he hated gardening. This dislike came after digging Bermuda grass out of his father’s vegetable garden in the middle of August. He has come a long way since that memorable hot and sweaty day.

He serves as the creator, writer, and senior producer of the Gardening by the Yard’s show, and shoots almost the entire show in his own backyard.

James remembers watching gardening shows when he was young and claims to have been amazed at how everything was always picture perfect. According to him, the soil was soft and crumbly. In addition, the plants were pest and disease-free. He was indeed happy when he got the chance to do his own show and therefore he decided to make it as real as possible. The realism in addition to Paul’s somewhat zany style and a commitment to all-natural approaches to gardening has endeared viewers to his show since it first aired on HGTV in 1996.

Paul never hides a location where the soil is bad or a plant that has been infested with bugs or is afflicted with a disease. This is one of the things he highlights. His aim is to help people be able to solve their own garden issues. Paul began his gardening profession in 1978, when he and his wife, Carrie, bought their first home.

Paul studied botany, plant physiology, and plant pathology as an undergraduate. In 1983, he earned his master’s gardener certification. Despite his impressive academic credentials, Paul admits that he learned most of what he knows about gardening by “digging in the dirt and making a few blunders along the way.”

Away from work, he enjoys cooking, fishing his favorite trout stream, playing guitar, hanging out with his kids, practicing Tae Kwon Do, and working on his third-degree black belt. Paul founded and maintained a corporate communications company that specialized in corporate humor for 14 years before joining the realm of television.
