Mortimer Sackler Biography

Mortimer  Sackler was born on December 7, 1916 – March 24, 2010, was an American-born British psychiatrist and entrepreneur who was a co-owner, with his brother Raymond, of Purdue Pharma.

Mortimer Sackler

Mortimer Sackler was known for his lavish philanthropy which included donations to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Gallery, the Royal College of Art, the Louvre and Berlin’s Jewish Museum.

Mortimer Sackler Family Philanthropy

Mortimer Sackler was the second son of Jewish immigrants Isaac Sackler, who was born in what is now Ukraine and Sophie (née Greenberg) Sackler from Poland. His father was a grocer in Brooklyn, where Sackler attended Erasmus Hall High School. He had two brothers, Arthur, the oldest who died in 1987, and Raymond, the youngest of the three who died in 2017.
The Sackler family has made a name as philanthropists and supported major cultural institutions, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, the Guggenheim, the Smithsonian, the Tate Gallery, the National Gallery, the Natural History Museum, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the British Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Serpentine Galleries, and the Louvre.
The family has also supported universities, including Harvard University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Columbia University, Tufts University, New York University, the Royal College of Art, the University of Sussex, and the University of Edinburgh.[3][11] The Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University is named after Arthur, Mortimer, and Raymond Sackler for their donations. Similarly, the Sackler Institute of Pulmonary Pharmacology at King’s College London was named after Mortimer and Theresa Sackler.
The Sackler family name, as used in institutions which the family has donated to, saw increased scrutiny in the late 2010s over the family’s association with OxyContin. David Crow, writing in the Financial Times, described the family name as “tainted”. In March 2019, the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate galleries announced that they would not accept further donations from the family. This came after the American photographer Nan Goldin threatened to withdraw a planned retrospective of her work in the National Portrait Gallery if the gallery accepted a £1 million donation from a Sackler fund.

Songs from “MSB” went on to be licensed over 30 times on cable and network television programs including FX’s Sons of Anarchy, and NBC’s Law and Order. Sackler-Berner was then signed to Razor and Tie Music Publishing in 2013.
Sackler-Berner founded rock band The Slim Kings in 2013 with drummer Liberty DeVitto. The band has released two albums, “Fresh Socks,” “Expensive Habits,” and selected singles. The Slim Kings have toured alongside ZZ Top, Los Lonely Boys, Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes, The Spin Doctors, and other headliners. Mortimer Sackler Rose

Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’ is a tall shrub rose with unusually small, dark green leaves and very few thorns. The name was chosen by Mortimer Sackler’s wife, who won the right to name the rose after her husband, in an auction.
Delicate, soft pink, cup-shaped double flowers are borne on slender dark stems. As each flower matures the petals open and it gradually exposes its yellow stamens. The gentle, fruity fragrance is reminiscent of old roses.
A versatile shrub rose, grow Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’ as an upright shrub or short climber. It may also be grown in pots.
Mulch once a year with well-rotted manure or compost, and prune in February. To prolong flowering in summer, deadhead regularly and add a high potash feed every fortnight.

Mortimer Sackler  Purdue Pharma

Purdue Pharma was founded in 1892 by medical doctors John Purdue Gray and George Frederick Bingham in Manhattan as the Purdue Frederick Company.
In 1952, the company was sold to two other medical doctors, Raymond, and Mortimer Sackler, who relocated the business to Yonkers, New York. Their older brother, Arthur Sackler, also held a one-third option in Purdue Pharma, which, after his death, was sold to his brothers. In the intervening years, the company opened additional offices in New Jersey and Connecticut. The headquarters are in Stamford, Connecticut.
The present-day company, Purdue Pharma L.P., was incorporated in 1991, and focuses on pain management medication, calling itself a “pioneer in developing medications for reducing pain, a principal cause of human suffering”. In September 2015, the company’s website said it has some 1,700 people on its payroll.
In September 2015, the company announced it would acquire VM Pharma, thereby gaining access to worldwide development and commercial rights to an allosteric selective tropomyosin receptor kinase inhibitor program, i.e., the Phase II candidate VM-902A. The deal could generate more than $213 million for VM Pharma.
