Holmes is an Australian journalist from Perth currently working as an Anchor/Correspondent for CNN International since April of 1996. Currently, he is based at the network’s headquarters in Atlanta.

Holmes, who has worked in journalism for more than four decades, hosts CNN Newsroom with Michael Holmes at 12 a.m., 2 a.m., and 3 a.m. ET on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as CNN Newsroom with Natalie Allen at 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. ET on Mondays.

Holmes has reported extensively from many corners of the globe, including Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, India, Nepal, Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, since joining CNNI in 1996 as the network’s first Australian anchor.

He most recently reported from the Mexico-Guatemala border on the Central American migrant issue, as well as the drowning deaths of an El Salvadoran man and his young daughter, who were discovered together on the Rio Grande’s banks after attempting to cross into the United States. Covering the fatal riots on the Gaza-Israel border, the Israeli elections, and the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris were among other recent assignments.

Holmes has covered a variety of wars, including covering the Iraq war from the start and making more than a dozen visits there, generally for weeks at a time. He covered every phase of the conflict, from resistance and occupation to Saddam Hussein’s conviction and execution. He escaped an ambush on a two-vehicle CNN convoy in January 2004, which killed two CNN employees and injured one.

Holmes spent several weeks in Iraq in the fall of 2016 covering the Iraqi-led battle to retake Mosul from ISIS. His reporting helped CNN win a Peabody Award for its coverage of the Battle for Mosul, ISIS in Iraq and Syria, and Undercover in Syria in 2016.

Following the horrific terror attacks at the Zaventum airport and Maelbeek metro station in Brussels in March 2016, he reported from the city. Holmes investigated Belgium’s response to the ISIS assaults for several days, even gaining an exclusive interview with a relative of Belgian extremist Hicham Chaib.

Michael hosted CNN’s breaking news coverage of the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015, which won a Royal Television Society (RTS) Award for ‘Best Breaking News Coverage’ in 2016.

Holmes has spent much of his career reporting from hotspots throughout the world, including Ukraine, where he anchored live from Kiev on the riots and was in Crimea for the contentious referendum that led to Russia’s annexation of Crimea. He also covered the Libyan revolution that led to Moammar Gadhafi’s overthrow, spending several weeks with Libyan rebels as they marched from the western mountains and covering the at times fierce fighting in a number of towns and cities.

He has also reported from Afghanistan on multiple occasions, spending weeks on the battlefield with US and Afghan troops.

In 2007, CNN’s award-winning documentary On Assignment: Month of Mayhem gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at Holmes’ reporting in Iraq during one of the war’s bloodiest months since it began in 2003.
