Frei is a German journalist from Essen currently working as the BBC’s Washington correspondent since 2002. He joined BBC in the year 1986 shortly after leaving University.

Prior to this, he was the BBC’s Asia correspondent based in Singapore, and in Hong Kong where he took up his post just before the handover to China.

He started his career with the BBC World Service in the German section. This was before moving to the English language Current Affairs from 1987 to 1988.

From the year 1992 to 1996, he was BBC Southern Europe correspondent in Rome. There, he covered events in Bosnia, North Africa, and the Mafia.

In addition, Matt has witnessed many dramatic events which include the fall of the Berlin Wall, and reported on the intifada and the Gulf War as the London foreign affairs correspondent.

Frei is an Award-winning journalist who has received the Amnesty International Asia Award in 1997 and 1998 for his reports on Vietnam and Indonesia. In addition, he received a Royal Television Society International News Award for his reports of turmoil in East Timor.

Matt went to school in Germany until his family moved to London when he was 10.

He is a graduate of Westminster School. Frei later joined Oxford University where he studied History and Spanish graduating in 1986.
