Martha Sugalski Triplets

Martha Sugalski’s Christmas miracle came early.

Her family and guests were uninjured in an explosion that shook her house Sunday afternoon during a party. A gas leak sent fire coming out of a gas fireplace in the living room and devastated her triplets’ nursery. The three babies, now 18 months old, were playing upstairs with their nanny and away from the blast.

“All that matters is the babies,” Sugalski said Tuesday afternoon. “We had guardian angels, thank God. What a way to start a party.”And they did go ahead with the party, the former WESH-Channel 2 anchor said.

“The fire department said the house was safe,” she said. “My husband had planned the party for months. We had Santa, carolers and the doctor who delivered the babies. Are you going to say no to Santa?”

In all, 30 people attended the event thrown by her husband, businessman Robert Reich. “It was a beautiful holiday party,” Sugalski said.Sugalski and Reich have spoken frankly about their challenges in having the babies. The family will be celebrating Christmas at home, but the blast meant that all the babies’ clothes and toys had to be taken away. They will be getting new furniture, too. The blast moved the furniture to the other side of the room and bent the blades on the ceiling fan.

Sons Heaton and Wilder and daughter Holden have been getting Christmas toys all this week — and ice cream before dinner — from their mother, who is thankful she can spoil them.”They’re talking and learning Spanish,” she said.

And what of Sugalski’s future? “I’m looking forward to Aug. 6, 2015,” she said. “I have no comment other than that.”But that date would mark when a non-compete clause would be up and she could move to another TV station locally. Most industry observers say she is headed to WFTV-Channel 9.

Earlier this month, Sugalski won an Emmy for her WESH coverage of a deadly day-care crash. It was her first Emmy.”It took me 22 years,” she said. “I screamed when they said my name.”

Why Did Martha Sugalski Leave Wesh

Viewers either love her or want to avoid her, according to my mail. They can do either when Sugalski, a former anchor at WESH-Channel 2, debuts opposite Bob Opsahl at 6 p.m. Monday on WFTV-Channel 9.

WFTV has to hope there are a lot of viewers like the Facebook reader who gushed about Sugalski: “She alone will be enough for our family to change the channel and move to WFTV-Channel 9. … Followed her for years, and her ability to tap into social media as she has made her an easy person to like. We consider her family as a result of her brilliant communication skills.”

But another reader came down in the opposite camp and wrote: “This is one viewer who will NOT follow Sugalski to WFTV. She is the quintessential example of celebrity journalism — the cult of personality.”

One reader wanted WFTV to pair Martie Salt and Sugalski, not Opsahl and Sugalski.

A reader blasted our coverage: “I would really like to know the back story behind all the coverage the Sentinel has bestowed on Martha Sugalski. Her maternity leave and new job have been followed closer than a Kardashian. Is she in tight with someone at the Sentinel? Does she have an expert publicist? Why is the Sentinel obsessed with making her a celebrity?”

Sugalski is a celebrity in her own right for her eight years at WESH, her skill in social media and her frankness in discussing her difficulties in delivering triplets. Her move to a new station in the same market was news.

The feedback on our coverage reflects the public’s interest in her. (She is not alone in that regard: I received a lot of responses to stories about Salt’s new duties and the passing of Mix 105.1 broadcaster Scott McKenzie.)

Sugalski needs no publicist; she is an expert publicist, as she demonstrates every day in social media.

I wrote an assigned story about her year off the air to help launch Orlando Signature magazine. I wrote another story about her social media skills earlier this month to explain why WFTV would want her.

She keeps connected on Twitter @MarthaSugalski (where she has 20,300 followers, up from 19,700 when the story ran) and via Facebook (where her fan page has nearly 56,000 likes, up from nearly 55,000 when the story ran).

Look at that growth. If she ever decides to leave TV news, she could give seminars on personal branding.

Some local media observers say the fascination with social media is a passing fad. But television, like other media, wants to connect with an audience, and Sugalski knows how to do that.

So the next chapter of her story begins Monday. We’ll look to you to tell us how you think it’s unfolding. Thank you, as always, for telling us what you think.

Where Is Martha Sugalski From

Martha was born in Philadelphia. Her family later moved to Florida where she has lived for most of her life. Since 2009, Martha is married to a man named Robert Reich and together, they live in Lake Mary, Florida. She was earlier married to sportscaster Craig Minervini, but they later separated.

Martha Sugalski Garbage Man

Remember back in the day when you used to get really excited about the simplest things? Finding a lucky penny, an upcoming field trip, a puppy … (OK, we still get excited about puppies.)

But as adults, we don’t often get that overwhelming sense of joy by the same things we did when we were younger. Especially about, say, a garbage man.

But that is just the case for the three adorable little kids in this video posted to Facebook last Thursday, which has garnered over 14 million views. With the excitement shown on the faces of these triplets, you’d think Mickey Mouse was coming down the street, but nope — it’s the garbage men that stop at the house every Tuesday and Friday.

The 2-year-old triplets can be seen eagerly awaiting their neon-vest-wearing visitors, yelling out, “Here they come!” as the big garbage truck pulls onto their street. Gatorades in hand, the two identical twin boys, Heaton and Wilder, run up to the truck offering the drinks, joined by their sister, Holden, prepared with hugs and a helping hand to the garbage men, Mr. Rob and Mr. Chad.

In an equally adorable fashion, the men sweetly greet the toddlers and let them help load the trash bags into the truck, much to the appreciation of the triplet’s mom, Martha Sugalski.

“[I’m] grateful the babies were able to see their friends that they clearly love so much,” Sugalski wrote on her Facebook page. “Grateful that these men take time out of their busy schedule to hang with us for a bit.”

Boy, I’ll tell ya, it really is all about appreciating the little things. If only every day could be as fun as garbage day.
