He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1980 with a B.A in American government. He has received more than 20 journalism awards including an Emmy Award in 2002.

He joined CBS News in 2001 and since then he has been involved in the covering of major domestic and international stories mainly for CBS Evening News. He was the correspondent for the 101st Airborne where he reported for 7 weeks as the US forces swept from Kuwait into Iraq.
Strassmann reported the story of Trayvon Martin, a Florida teenager who was gunned down in Sanford, Florida, by neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. He also provided extensive coverage of the Zimmerman trial.
He was involved in the reporting of the BP oil spill for four months, Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, the Terry Schiavo right-to-die story, church burnings in the South, the shuttle program, Colorado wildfires and Texas floods, the raising of the Hunley submarine, the Worldcom accounting debacle, the aftermath of September 11th and the trials of aging Ku Klux Klan members in the Birmingham church bombing.
He has also made multiple trips to Iraq since 2003. Strassmann covered the fall of President Aristide, who was the Haitian President. Before joining CBS News, he was working as a correspondent for NBC News from 1997 – 2001.
