Evans is a Canadian journalist currently working as a foreign correspondent for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Margaret was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She has a BA from the University of Alberta and an MA from the City University of London. A veteran conflict reporter, Evans has covered civil wars and strife in Angola, Chad and Sudan as well as the myriad battlefields of the Middle East. She was based in Jerusalem from 2004 until late 2011 taking on the role of Middle East Bureau Chief in 2009. During her time in the region she reported on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the US invasion of Iraq, the 2006 Israel-Lebanon War, jihadist recruiting in Yemen and the “Arab Spring” uprisings in Egypt, Libya and Syria.

More recently Evans has reported from the battle lines being drawn between ISIS and the Kurds of Northern Iraq and from Ukraine during the revolution and subsequent annexation of Crimea by Russia.

This year Evans has covered the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in the Mediterranean Sea as migrants risk crossings at the mercy of human trafficking networks. She also reported from South Africa on the existential threat facing the rhino in an increasingly weaponised battle between poachers and wildlife conservationists.

In the 1990s Evans was a freelance journalist based in Brussels where she charted the European Union’s path towards political and economic union and the creation of the Euro. She also covered the Balkan Wars from NATO head-quarters and the bloodless revolution that saw the former Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic arrested and sent to the Hague to stand trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia.

Significant interviews include those with: German Chancellor Angela Merkel; Queen Rania of Jordan; the former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals, Louise Arbour and South African human rights lawyer and anti-apartheid activist George Bizos. Evans was a 2013 Gold Medal winner at the New York Festivals and an RTNDA Ron Laidlaw winner for her coverage in Syria along with colleague Derek Stoffel. In 2007 Evans was presented with an Amnesty International Canada Media Award for her work from Gaza, Syria and Lebanon in the Dispatches program “The Paradox of Democracy.”
