Ken Watlington is an American journalist currently serving as a weekday evening co-anchor for WCNT 9 On Your Side news team at 5-6:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. He joined WNCT 9 On Your Side news team in January of 2016. Watlington is originally from Plymouth, Eastern Carolina. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Ken began his broadcasting career at WWAY in Wilmington as a production assistant while in college. While at WWAY, he worked his way up in nine months thus becoming a morning news anchor. In addition to his roles in WWAY, he also anchored weekend sports and weekend news.
Watlington has partnered in covering major events at WWAY like Hurricane Floyd, Presidential visits, UNCW basketball in the NCAA tournament and two U.S. Open golf tournaments in Pinehurst. While there, he has worked alongside Jerry Jackson, now chief meteorologist for WNCT Storm Team 9 Weather. Prior to moving back to ENC, Ken has served as sports director and anchor at Buckeye Cable Sports Network in Toledo, Ohio. During his eight years there, he has covered Detroit Tigers baseball, from spring training to their 2012 World Series appearance, Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball and plenty of college sports – including Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Toledo and Bowling Green.
During his free time, Ken likes spending time at the beach along the Carolina coast, running, playing basketball, visiting a local craft brewery, cooking and traveling. He is also an avid sports fan, always cheering on his favorite teams including his alma mater UNCW Seahawks, Atlanta Braves, Carolina Hurricanes, the Washington Football Team and Charlotte Hornets.
