She enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1975 and she became a Delta Delta Delta sorority sister. She was married to John Paul Monahan in 1989 but he died of colon cancer in 1998. After a 2 year relationship, she got engaged to John Molner in 2013 and they got married in The Hamptons on June 21st, 2014.

She joined NBC News in 1989 where she was Deputy Pentagon Correspondent. She was a substitute anchor from 1989-1991. She co-hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony alongside Mike Tirico.
She also provided additional Winter Olympic coverage and athlete interviews. During the opening ceremony, she suggested, erroneously, that the Dutch use their skates like a normal mode of transportation during wintertime, prompting criticism and bemusement from the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands and others.
She apologized that her intended compliment didn’t “come out” as intended, which the Embassy accepted, and invited her to the Netherlands for a tour. She has interviewed famous people across the world on the Today Show including President Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.
She has won numerous awards including the prestigious Peabody Award. She returned to a week-long stint as the co-host of Today in January 2017 to mark Matt Lauer’s 20th anniversary as the anchor of this program.
