Jim Avila (James Avila) is an American television journalist, currently the Senior Law and Justice Correspondent for ABC News.
Jim Avila Biography
Jim graduated with the name of Jim Simon from Glenbard East High School. He was a correspondent for NBC News, before joining ABC. He frequently anchors ABC’s World News Saturday.
Jim began his journalism career when he worked as a weekend anchor and the San Jose bureau chief for KPIX where he worked from 1976 to 1980 in San Francisco. Later from 1980 to 1984 Avila served as a general assignment reporter for WLS, the ABC owned station in Chicago.
He later joined WBBM-TV as a general assignment reporter, where he covered Beirut War, the TWA hijacking, the Nicaraguan civil war, and the Mexican earthquake.
Jim Avila joined KNBC as the investigative reporter from 1994 to 1996 in Los Angeles. While there he served as the principal reporter on the O.J. Simpson criminal trial. For the trial coverage, the station won the 1995 Golden Mike Award and a 1996 Emmy Award.

Before joining ABC Avila was working at NBC News, where he had served as National Correspondent for “Nightly News” since January 2000, covering a range of domestic issues that included the September 11 attacks and the aftermath and the DC sniper shootings. He also reported from Afghanistan and Iraq, during which time he filed from inside NBC’s Baghdad hotel compound during and after its bombing by terrorists.
Avila was a Chicago, bureau correspondent, before being named National Correspondent at NBC. While at NBC, he covered high-profile events including the shooting tragedies in Littleton, Jonesboro, Ark., Kentucky, and Paducah.
He later in 2000 joined ABC as a National Correspondent for Nightly News, the position he still holds today. Working with ABC, he covered a wide range of domestic issues including the Sept. 2011 attacks and their aftermath and the D.C. sniper shootings.
Jim joined ABC News 20/20 as a correspondent in the year 2004 where he reported on a wide range of stories, including his unique brand of investigations. Currently, he serves as the regular correspondent for 20/20 and also reports for all other ABC News platforms.

In late 2017, veteran Jim Avila was told by his doctors that he would need a new kidney due to diabetes-related kidney failure. It was a big race for him, as he had to find a kidney donor and needed to have a transplant within three months or else he would have to undergo dialysis.
Jaie Avila, the youngest of his five siblings, and also a TV news reporter, agreed to donate one of his kidneys to Jim.
Immediately after that the doctor scheduled the surgeries and in April 2018, Jim underwent the kidney transplant and now he has recovered from the kidney transplant surgery.
In an interview with TV Newser, while undergoing surgery, he said he felt lucky to have the support of his family and friend.
