Erica began her career in journalism in 1998 working as a production assistant for “PC Week Radio”, an online news program for PC Week magazine. At the same time, she was also the part of the Software Publishers Association Europe as a conference coordinator.

She later joined TechTV in 2000 serving as a reporter. The news program was later named TechLive. In 2001 she became the co-anchor and correspondent for the program. She was one of the reporters for TechTV who reported the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001.

Erica joined CNN for the CNN’s Headline News channel at the beginning of 2003. She first worked as a general news anchor for various programs. In 2004 she became the national correspondent for the CNN Newsource. From 2005 to 2006 she worked as a co-anchor for the Prime News Tonight. In 2006, she became the anchor for the program Prime News with Erica Hill for which she worked for two years.

In April 2005, she started serving for the show of journalist Anderson Cooper’s Anderson Cooper 360° by providing the news updates. She became the full-time member in 2008. For around three months from November 2009, she contributed the CNN Tonight as its co-anchor. Hill appeared in the Anderson Cooper’s program until January 8, 2010, and it was announced that Hill is going to leave CNN as she was about to join CBS News. She replaced Russ Mitchell for The Early Show which was announced on January 13, 2010, by CBS. In absence of journalist and author Katie Couric, Hill anchored the CBS Evening News. From September 2012, she started serving as a Special Correspondent for CBS News for which she contributed to November 1, 2012.

On June 6, 2016, it was announced that Hill as going to rejoin CNN and would work as the anchor for news program at HLN. She returned with a new program entitled “On the Story with Erica Hill.” The program was premiered in October 2016.

It was announced on April 19, 2018 that Erica would return to CNN as lead fill-in anchor and national correspondent and she would leave her HLN show On The Story which originated from New York City.

On November 1, 2012, NBC announced that starting November 3, 2012, Hill would join Weekend Today as co-anchor and would serve as an NBC News national correspondent. NBC News president Steve Capus said, “Erica’s extraordinary track record as a journalist has proven that she can cover everything from hard news to pop culture with ease and professionalism. She’s a fantastic addition to Weekend Today and I’m delighted to welcome her to NBC News.” On April 3, 2016, Hill announced she was leaving the Weekend Today show in order to spend more time with family, but continue daily news reporting on MSNBC and NBC Nightly News.

In 2017 Erica delivered a monologue during her HLN show, ‘On the Story’. She recounted how former bosses and co-anchors had demeaned her — including former CBS This Morning anchor Charlie Rose.

During the monologue, she didn’t mention his name but after she appeared later on CNN Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin, she did.

She said, [He] made it very clear I was in the way — who decided I would be allowed to speak on our program when he pointed at me. Imagine a seventy-year-old man pointing his finger at you; that’s the sign I was allowed to ask a question. What an honour to be given a privilege to be allowed to do my job: with a point.
