Wachtel is a Canadian journalist from Montreal, Quebec currently working as the host of the flagship literary show Writers & Company on CBC Radio One.

She is a proud graduate of McGill University where she studied English literature.

Wachtel lived in the United States and Kenya before working as a freelance writer and broadcaster in Vancouver in the mid-1970s.

Wachtel relocated to Toronto in the fall of 1987 to work full-time as a Literary Commentator on CBC Stereo’s State of the Arts, then as a writer-broadcaster for The Arts Tonight and as a Toronto reporter for The Arts Report. She was the host of CBC Radio’s Writers & Company since its start in 1990 and was the anchor of The Arts Tonight from 1996 until 2007. Wachtel previously worked as a host on the Arts on Ideas.

The year 1993 saw Knopf Canada publish Writers & Company, a collection of interviews, and More Writers & Company which was published in the fall of 1996. Original Minds was published by HarperCollins in spring 2003. She contributed to Carol Shields’ best-selling Dropped Threads (2001) and Michael Ondaatje et al Lost Classics (2000). Random Illuminations: Conversations With Carol Shields was published in 2007 by Eleanor.

The New York Festivals Prize for the World’s Best Radio Programs was awarded to Writers & Company in 2011. Writers & Company has won the prestigious CBC Award for Programming Excellence twice for the finest nationally televised weekly show. The judges said in 1995 that if they had to choose one hour of radio to take to a desert island, they would choose Writers & Company. The year 2003 saw Writers and Company win an Excellence Award.

Eleanor Wachtel was named the winner of the Jack Award for promoting Canadian authors and literature in 2002.

Currently, she possesses eight honorary degrees. This includes a Doctor of Laws from Concordia University in Montreal (2010), a Doctor of Letters (2009) from McGill University in Montreal, and a Doctor of Laws from Dalhousie University in Halifax which she earned in 2007. Additionally, she earned the D. Litt. award in 2007 from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby and Litt. (2002) from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. She also earned a D. Litt award in 2001 from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver. In addition, she earned another D. Litt. award in the year 2000 from Athabasca University in Alberta; and D.Litt. award from St. Thomas University in Fredericton in 1999.
