Christine Lund Today

Retro Friday: What Ever Happened to Christine Lund?

It’s been nearly ten years since Christine Lund left the L.A. airwaves for a second time,
signing off from KABC in 1998. Since then, according to her Wikipedia entry, she has been running a general store in a tiny, remote Alaskan town.

Lund has been cited as the inspiration for the line “the bubble-headed bleach blonde who comes on at five” in Don Henley’s song “Dirty Laundry”; she’s also rumored to be an inspiration for Christina Applegate’s character in “Anchorman.” She originally left KABC in 1986 to spend more time with her family, but was lured back to the anchor desk in 1990; she then left for good in 1998.

I especially like the quick clip above because it uses the old, famous expression “Film at 11” — a term that died at the end of the 1970s, when everyone went to videotape.

Speaking of videotape, here’s another fun find A late 1970s promotion from Sony, explaining the wonder of Betamax. Check out the video camera with a separate shoulder-strap video player (something I remember well, as my dad bought a VHS version in 1981).

Christine Lund KABC’s Lund exiting early

Veteran local news anchor Christine Lund has exited KABC, again.

Lund has been off the air for more than a month. While battling pneumonia and a broken leg. She had planned to ankle KABC at year’s end, but the health problems speeded her departure. Lund most recently anchored KABC’s 11:30 a.m. newscast.

She was a mainstay on KABC from 1972 until 1986.  When she left the TV biz to concentrate on raising her children. She returned to an anchor’s slot on the ABC O&O in 1990.

Christine Lund Tawny Little

TAWNY LITTLE SITTING IN IN CHRISTINE LUND’S SPOT

With the continuing absence of Christine Lund, KABC-TV Channel 7 has tapped former anchor Tawny Little to take her place for the next two weeks on its “Eyewitness News.”

Little, who was a news anchor at the station from 1978 to 1984, will join veteran Jerry Dunphy on Channel 7’s 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts, beginning today.

She will be filling in for Lund, who is in the process of renegotiating her contract at the station. A KABC spokeswoman described the assignment as “a two-week experiment.”

Lund has been off the air since June 5. Her contract expired at the end of the month. Ed Hookstratten, her agent, said that she wants to cut back on her duties at KABC to spend more time with her children.

“As far as we know, they are still negotiating and we hope she’ll be back,” a Channel 7 spokesman said.

Little, a former Miss America, left KABC in 1985 to pursue an acting career, but she returned last May, having been hired to co-host the fall season of Channel 7’s “Eye on L.A.” magazine series with Chuck Henry.

At the time, KABC officials said that she would only be appearing in entertainment programs, not news–maintaining the policy of separation between the two divisions that they instituted several years ago.

KABC General Manager John Severino was not immediately available to comment on the decision to put Little in the anchor’s seat, rather than someone else from the news staff. Laura Diaz filled in last week.

It’s not the first time Little has taken over for Lund. She succeeded Lund as an anchor of KABC’s 11 p.m. newscast in June 1982.
