She was born to Peggy and Donald Cameron Forbes. She was raised up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her mother is an African-American and her father was of French and Scottish descent. In 1988 she attended Phillips Exeter Academy, then enrolled at Havard University where she studied visual arts.
She met Thomas Lauderdale a classically trained pianist at Havard University and became friends. They met regularly to play music together. She won the Jonathan Levy Prize for acting when she was still at Harvard.
She graduated in 1992 and later worked as an actress for several years, performing Off-Broadway in New York City. After she became a musician, forming a band and she recorded a solo album. Thomas then asked her to sing with Pink Martini, a band he had assembled to play at political fundraisers.
In 1998 she moved to Portland to work full time with the band after three years of commuting from New York. Together with Thomas, she co-wrote the band’s hit “Sympathique (Je ne Veux Pas Travailler)” among many other band originals.
She has also released solo albums that include Love Handle (November 1995) and ‘78 (Heinz 2008) which includes her song “Hey Eugene” in its original version. She is featured on Michael Feinstein’s album The Sinatra Project, singing a duet of “How Long Will It Last?” She recorded two songs in French with Georges Moustaki for his album Solitaire.
She is a cousin of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and indie-rock musician Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear. Her sister is Maya Forbes, a screenwriter, and director. Maya’s movie Infinitely Polar Bear (2014) was inspired by events from childhood.China Forbes
