Tina Fey and Carol Burnett Are Making a Movie About . . . Carol Burnett
or years, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have made it known that they are the unofficial co-presidents of the Carol Burnett fan club, singing the TV legend’s praises at awards shows and prestigious events like the Kennedy Center Honors. They’ve since moved on to phase two of their fandom: using their dual industry power to get new Burnett projects off the ground. Poehler first gave this a whirl in 2016, producing a potential ABC sitcom that would have starred Burnett as a kooky houseguest—but the project fizzled out, buried under endless network notes. Now, it’s Fey’s turn, and she’s taking a different tack: moving away from television and into movies.
According to Variety, Fey is set to produce an adaptation of Burnett’s memoir, Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story. In the 2013 best-seller, Burnett traces the story of her daughter Carrie Hamilton, who struggled with drug addiction as a teenager. She later became sober, working in the entertainment industry before dying of cancer at 38 years old. “I think of her every day,” Burnett said in a 2018 interview. “She never leaves me . . . I just feel her.”
“She got sober when she was 17,” Burnett continued. “I put her in a third rehab place, and oh my God, she hated me. I came to the conclusion that I had to love her enough to let her hate me. She got sober, and we started bonding. We wound up working together, writing a play together. We worked together in three shows.”
Their work together includes an episode of Touched by an Angel and the TV movie Hostage. Hamilton’s father was the late TV producer Joe Hamilton.
Focus Features is behind the memoir adaptation, which will be produced by Burnett, Fey, Eric Gurian, and Steven Rogers. Writing duo Ian and Eshom Nelms will write the screenplay. Casting for the upcoming film has not yet been announced.
