Ortega joins CNN after a long career as an investigative journalist, most recently working as a specialized writer for the Arizona Republic, where he covered the border and focused on child welfare for nearly six years. He was also managing editor of the Honolulu Civil Beat, a publication dedicated to accountability journalism.

Ortega began his media career in Alaska, working as a television reporter in Fairbanks, Juneau, and Anchorage before moving to the Anchorage Times, where he exposed a military program researching lethal biological and chemical agents in a remote military base outside Delta, Alaska.

Bob went on to work as the managing editor of the Homer News before moving on to the Seattle Times and the Wall Street Journal, where he covered child labor and other topics. Bob wrote “In Sam, We Trust: The Untold Story of Sam Walton and Wal-Mart, the World’s Largest Retailer” while at the Journal.

Ortega spent 10 years working in nations like Paraguay, Georgia, Belarus, and Ukraine, teaching journalists in investigative reporting and working through military coups in Paraguay and revolutions in Georgia and Ukraine. The Lukashenko administration canceled his visa and forced him to move out of the country after a program he led to support independent news media in Belarus was shut down.

He has trained journalists in 17 countries across four continents and served as a Knight International Press Fellow in Paraguay. Ortega was also a journalism professor at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
