McDonald is a Canadian journalist from Wingham who worked as a host for CBC Radio’s QUIRKS & QUARKS. This is an award-winning science program with a national audience of nearly 500,000 people.

He was also a regular correspondent for CBC Television’s THE NATIONAL, in addition to being the host and writer of the children’s series Heads Up!, for which he won a Gemini Award. The Greatest Canadian Invention and the seven-part series Water Under Fire were also filmed at McDonald’s. 

McDonald’s has contributed to a number of science textbooks, newspapers, and magazines as a print journalist, including The Globe and Mail, Owl Magazine, among others. Canadian Spacewalkers: Hadfield MacLean and Williams Remember The Ultimate High Adventure is his most recent book. He wrote the preface of The Quirks & Quarks Question Book and the introduction to Guide to Space: 42 Questions (and Answers) About Life, the Universe.

McDonald also serves on the board of the Friends of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and is a sought-after public speaker across the country.

He has received the Michael Smith Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the Sir Sanford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute, and the McNeil Medal from The Royal Society of Canada for his remarkable contribution to the promotion of science in Canada. McDonald was also named Best Host in a Pre-School, Children’s, or Youth Program or Series at the 2008 Gemini Awards.

Twelve honorary doctorates and two honorary college degrees have been bestowed upon him. In 2011, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in 2014, the asteroid 2006 XN67 was officially named after him.
