Through her work, she has been able to expose widespread sexual abuse in nursing homes to one of the longest-running scams in history. Her work has also inspired legislative action and government investigation.

Ellis and her longstanding reporting partner, Melanie Hicken, won the renowned Heywood Broun Award of Distinction for their trailblazing investigation into the secret world of government debt collectors, which prompted lawmakers to pass legislation to close the gap exposed in the stories. The two journalists have received awards from the International Association of Broadcasting, the National Press Club, the National Endowment for Financial Education, the Radio Television Digital News Association, and the National Association of Consumer Advocates for their coverage of guns in America.

Ellis was also honored by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and the New York Newswomen’s Club. Ellis discusses her investigations on CNN and other television and radio networks on a regular basis.
