He attended Scarsdale High School from where he graduated in 1995. In 1999, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University where he was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity.

He joined The New York Times as a student intern during his senior year in high school. Sorkin also worked for the paper while he was in college, publishing 71 articles before he graduated. He started by writing media and technology articles while assisting the advertising columnist, Stuart Elliott. He then spent the summer of 1996 working for Businessweek, before he returned to The New York Times.
Ross moved to London for part of 1998, where he wrote about European business and technology for The New York Times. He then returned to Cornell to complete his studies. He was vice president of the Sigma Pi fraternity at Cornell.
