Trebek revealed in a video message on March 6, 2019, that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. While talking about his diagnosis, the Jeopardy! the host made it clear that he’s going to “keep working” under the terms of his contract for the next three years at least, and plans to “beat the low survival rate statistics for the disease.”
As of now, it looks like Alex is staying put. Fans of the show wondered if he might walk away after he took a brief medical leave of absence in January 2018 following his brain blood clot surgery. After focusing on his recovery though, Alex returned to the show weeks later. Then, in July 2018, he told Fox’s OBJECTified that the chances he would stay on Jeopardy! after 2020 were “50/50 and a little less.”
Despite all of this, a lot has changed in the past few months, including the fact that in November 2018, Alex renewed his contract with the program through 2022.
Even still, leaving does seem to be lingering at the back of his mind. He recently revealed that he had a few host replacements in mind all ready for when the time actually does come.
“It’s probably going to be a woman, somebody younger, somebody bright, somebody personable, somebody with a great sense of humor, so I nominated Betty White,” he joked to 92nd Street Y in February.
After getting a quip in, Alex then listed out some candidates he truly think would do the job, such as CNN’s Laura Coates, LA Kings announcer Alex Faust, and TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz.
Of course, whoever does end up taking the role down the road will have some huge shoes to fill. But that’s probably way, way, way in the future. The bottom line is that, for now, Alex isn’t going anywhere, and you’ll be able to enjoy his clever cracks on Jeopardy! for the foreseeable future.

During a July 2018 interview, he suggested that the end of the line was approaching when he revealed that the chances of him returning to host Jeopardy after the end of his contract in 2020 were “50/50 and a little less.” He also named two possible replacements: Los Angeles Kings play-by-play announcer Alex Faust and radio host, author, and legal professor Laura Coates.

Alex Trebek has more good news to share regarding his cancer treatment: Less than three months after announcing his initial diagnosis, the Jeopardy! the host is nearing remission, according to his doctors.
As Trebek revealed in an interview with People, some of his tumors “have already shrunk by more than 50 percent” following chemotherapy, despite the disheartening survival rate for Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
“It’s kind of mind-boggling. The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory,” Trebek shared, adding that he cried “tears of joy, not tears of depression” upon learning the good news.
Trebek first revealed his cancer diagnosis in March, maintaining that he “plan[s] to beat the low survival-rate statistics for this disease.”
Earlier this month, he offered a positive health update to Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts, revealing that his platelet count and cancer markers had thus far been reassuring. He also candidly shared his experiences with surges of “deep, deep sadness” during treatment.
“I’ve discovered in this whole episode, ladies and gentlemen, that I’m a bit of a wuss. But I’m fighting through it,” he said at the time.
Trebek’s chemotherapy is ongoing, and he currently plans to return to Jeopardy! for its 36th season this fall.
