Adam Weitsman Biography
Adam Weitsman (Adam Joel Weitsman) is an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, the owner and chief executive officer (CEO) of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling.
Adam was born in Owengo, NY. He is the son of Harold Fredrick (Fred) Weitsman. His grandfather is Ben Weitsman who started a used auto parts business in 1938, which evolved into a scrap processing company called Ben Weitsman & Son in 1958.

Adam Weitsman Upstate Shredding
Adam opened Upstate Shredding at the Tioga County Industrial Park in Owego, NY in 1997. In the late 1990s, the company was in danger of bankruptcy after business investments were made during a lagging metal industry.
Adam, in 2004, served eight months at Otisville Federal Prison in New York, then another two and a half months in a halfway house for kiting checks during the company’s financial struggles that started in 1998.
Later in 2005, he acquired Upstate Shredding’s sister company, Ben Weitsman & Son, Inc., after his father retired and he later in December 2009, he acquired an 11-acre scrapyard in Solvay, NY from Peter Matlow for $225,000.
By the end of the year 2009, Upstate Shredding was the largest privately held scrap company on the East Coast. In March 2010, Upstate Shredding won Tioga County’s Business of the Year award.
Adam acquired a number of scrap companies and additional properties, including a bankrupt scrap yard in New Castle, PA, between the year 2012 and 2016. By the end of 2016, the properties and companies were collectively known as Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling.
That same year, Adam won the Platts Industry Leadership Award and the AMM Scrap Company of the Year award for the second year in a row.
Later in May 2018, a U.S. District Judge found a former Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling employee guilty of defamation. The former employee had spread false claims about Adam online and was ordered to stop.

Adam donated $175,000 to four Boys & Girls Clubs in Owego, Binghamton, Syracuse, and Endicott, in January 2019, after promising on social media that he would make the donation if Syracuse were to beat Duke in a basketball game that aired on January 14.
